Born on June 18, 1942, in Idutywa, South Africa, Thabo Mbeki is the son of ANC activist Govan Mbeki and grew up in a politically active family. He joined the ANC Youth League at 13, went into exile in 1962, and studied economics at the University of London and Sussex University, earning a master’s degree. He also underwent Marxist–Leninist and military training in the Soviet Union. South Africa’s president from 1999 to 2008, Mbeki is a proponent of the African Renaissance, enjoys intellectual pursuits, and serves as Chancellor of Unisa, emphasizing African development through education.
